POKIT
or 'The Play Observation Kit' is a developmental assessment that provides
a systematic framework for observing a child's spontaneous play in interaction
with a parent or other caregiver. It is based on objectively described
play behaviours derived from extensive research on normally developing
children.
POKIT is intended for assessing children when problems in development
have been identified but the nature of their difficulties needs further
investigation. It is suitable for children who are between 12 and 48 months
- or who are developmentally within this range.
The product is supplied on an easy to install CD-ROM disk that contains
all the information that is needed to use the assessment including the
forms and checklists. A printed version of the Manual is also supplied
(200pp, A4, wire bound).
The author is Kay Mogford-Bevan a developmental psychologist and speech
and language therapist with many years experience in observing play and
communication in young children. POKIT has been developed over many years
and is based on her research with normally developing children and children
with developmental disabilities.
- by using a standard kit of toys both symbolic
and non-symbolic play is assessed
- by using a familiar adult as the child's
play partner to provide a secure environment, a rich sample of the child's
social interaction and communication can be observed
- by using checklists containing over 470 items
of frequently observed play, each item with an age guide, users can
compare the play of the child being observed against a 'map' of normal
development
- by using the expertise and knowledge of the
parent, the user can establish to what extent the observed play is typical
of the child's capabilities and difficulties
- by using a series of observation prompts that
are provided, users can identify qualitative characteristics of the
child's play and ability to learn through interaction.
The comparison of symbolic and non-symbolic play together with a systematic
appraisal of social interaction and communication is used to identify
children who are at risk of autistic spectrum disorders.
A framework is provided for the observation of the child's picture and
story book 'reading' with the parent or caregiver. This allows users to
assess this early stage of language and literacy development normally
established before entry to nursery education.
