Education in Chemistry Review September 1999
CARE (Chemistry Assessment and Revision Exercises)
This is an excellent resource that will be well used by busy teachers.
The software is specifically targetted at the chemistry components of
the NEAB (AQA) suite of GCSE science syllabuses but would prove useful
for similar courses.
The CD-ROM is easily installed and reveals a range of readily accessible
features. The chemistry is covered by over 100 worksheets on which students
answer directly as well as equivalent copy sheets which they can copy
out and complete. Higher level and single subject material is clearly
distinguished, and answers and mark schemes are provided. A split-screen
facility allows the contents list and individual pages to be viewed at
the same time and a key word index permits searches for relevant assessment
sheets that can be printed without difficulty.
The format of the exercises is traditional with emphasis on on recall
of information. They do provide, however, a readily available resource
for routine practice within and outside of the classroom. They could also
be used to monitor and support the needs of individual students. The exercises
might also be valuable at A-level to check on prior learning before extending
specific topics.
